Hey everyone, it's Oluchi here! As a makeup artist and aesthetician, I'm always on the lookout for innovative skincare products. Recently, The Ordinary's Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner caught my eye, and I've been putting it to the test for the past week. I have some strong opinions to share, so let's get right into it!
The toner arrives in a sleek, 100ml glass bottle. I appreciate the substantial feel and the sophisticated look it adds to my vanity. This packaging feels like a departure from The Ordinary's typical minimalist aesthetic, and it definitely stands out. This also marks a shift in their toner offerings. Known primarily for their potent acid toners, this milky, hydrating formula is a refreshing change of pace. When I received it, I was immediately intrigued.
The name "Saccharomyces Ferment" might sound intimidatingly scientific, but it's actually derived from a very common ingredient: yeast! Yes, you read that right. Saccharomyces is a genus of yeast, and its ferment is known for its beneficial properties in skincare. While the thought of yeast on your face might seem unusual, trust me, the results speak for themselves.

The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner
Yeast-Powered Radiance
tl;dr
A hydrating and gently exfoliating toner derived from yeast.
Pros
Cons
The Ordinary markets this product as a gentle exfoliating toner, and that's precisely what it delivers. Unlike harsh chemical exfoliants, this toner gently removes dead skin cells while simultaneously hydrating the skin. This dual action is a game-changer, leaving my skin feeling refreshed and revitalized. The exfoliation process naturally brightens the complexion by revealing the fresh, radiant skin underneath. It also helps to reduce the appearance of dark marks, which is a definite bonus.
I've incorporated this toner into my morning skincare routine every day for the past week. As directed, I apply it after cleansing my face. While it can be used both morning and night, I've primarily used it in the mornings. My evening routine sometimes includes other toners, so I haven't been as consistent with this one at night.
Let's address the one potential drawback: the smell. Because this toner is derived from fermented yeast, it doesn't have a particularly pleasant fragrance. To be completely frank, it's a bit off-putting. It reminds me of, well, mild vomit. I know, TMI! However, the scent dissipates quickly, and I simply hold my breath during application. This is just my personal experience, and others might not find it as bothersome. I understand why it smells the way it does – fermentation isn't known for producing delightful aromas – so it's not a deal-breaker for me. It's honestly the only downside I've encountered.
The consistency is true to its name: milky. It's opaque and creamy, and I typically apply it with a cotton pad. I saturate the pad and then gently swipe it across my face and neck. Even after a thorough cleanse, I always notice residue on the cotton pad after using this toner. This is visual proof that it's effectively lifting away dead skin cells and any remaining impurities. It’s remarkably effective at exfoliating, perhaps even a bit too effective. While my skin hasn't experienced any irritation from daily use, I plan to reduce the frequency to every other day or a few times a week as a preventative measure. I always err on the side of caution with exfoliants, even gentle ones.
Despite its gentle nature, the exfoliating power of this toner is truly impressive. I'm genuinely pleased with the results. A little goes a long way, and I only need a small amount to cover my entire face and neck. I can visibly see the dead skin it removes, and importantly, my skin doesn't feel dry or tight afterward. In fact, it feels quite supple, which is a huge plus. The alcohol-free formula contributes to this comfortable, hydrated feeling.
After applying the Saccharomyces toner, I continue with the rest of my skincare routine. This might include a serum like The Ordinary's Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% for brightening or their Marine Hyaluronics for hydration. I then follow up with a moisturizer, such as Bioderma Sebium Ultra-Nourishing Cream for its balancing properties or COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence for its soothing and hydrating benefits. During the day, I always finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen like La Roche-Posay Anthelios. At night, I omit the SPF, of course.
This toner also addresses textural irregularities and supports the skin barrier, offering a comprehensive range of benefits. To incorporate it into your routine, simply cleanse your face, apply the toner, and then follow with any treatments or serums you use. Moisturize and finish with SPF during the day. Toners are a non-negotiable step in my skincare routine. While some consider them optional, I believe they play a crucial role in preparing the skin for subsequent products, maximizing their absorption and effectiveness. This hydrating milky toner is a fantastic addition to any skincare regimen.
The 100ml bottle is priced at £12.40, which I consider reasonable given how little product is needed per application. I'm not sure how long this bottle will last, but I'm definitely considering repurchasing it once it's empty.
Overall, my impression of The Ordinary's Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner is overwhelmingly positive. The only minor drawback for me is the scent, but it's easily manageable. The exfoliating and hydrating benefits are truly remarkable, and I'm thrilled to have discovered this unique toner.
