Hi everyone, Oluchi here! As a makeup artist and esthetician, I'm constantly exploring the world of skincare to discover the most effective combinations for achieving healthy, radiant skin. Today, I'm excited to share my personal nighttime routine featuring a dynamic duo that has truly transformed my complexion: snail mucin and retinol (specifically, prescription tretinoin). These powerhouse ingredients, when used correctly, can work wonders for your skin. I'll break down the when, why, and how of incorporating them into your routine for optimal results. Let's dive in!
Every great skincare routine begins with a clean canvas. Thoroughly cleansing your face is paramount to removing dirt, makeup, excess oil, and other impurities that accumulate throughout the day. This crucial step prepares your skin to effectively absorb the beneficial ingredients that follow. I've already cleansed my face before starting this tutorial, but make sure you choose a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type.
This often-overlooked step is key, especially when using snail mucin. Damp skin absorbs products much more effectively than dry skin. I prefer using a refreshing thermal spray like the one I'm using here, but plain water works just as well. The goal is to have slightly damp skin, not soaking wet. Think of it like a slightly damp sponge – it's ready to soak up all the goodness.
If you enjoy using a toner in your routine, opt for a hydrating formula. Avoid toners containing harsh acids like AHAs or BHAs, or anything overly astringent. We're aiming for soothing and calming ingredients like glycerol. My personal favorite is a gentle, hydrating toner from Simon Durian. Lightly apply it to your damp skin to further prepare it for the snail mucin.
Now for one of the stars of the show: snail mucin! I'm currently using the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, and it's been a game-changer for my hydration levels. Two pumps are all you need. Gently pat and press the mucin into your damp skin. This technique is crucial! Applying snail mucin to dry skin can actually have the opposite effect and dry it out further. We want that plump, hydrated glow that snail mucin is famous for. Snail mucin is packed with beneficial ingredients that help to soothe, repair, and hydrate the skin, creating a perfect base for the next steps in your routine. Allow the mucin to fully absorb before moving on. You'll notice your skin feeling incredibly soft and supple.

After applying the snail mucin, allow your skin to dry completely before moving on to the next step. This waiting period, which usually takes a few minutes, ensures that the snail mucin has ample time to absorb and work its magic without interference. This allows each product to penetrate the skin effectively and deliver its full benefits.
Here's where my prescription tretinoin from Dermatica comes in. Tretinoin, a potent form of vitamin A, is a true skincare powerhouse known for its ability to increase cell turnover, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin texture. If you're new to retinoids or find them irritating, consider the "sandwich method." This involves applying a layer of moisturizer before your retinol/tretinoin to buffer its effects and minimize potential irritation.
Since my skin tolerates tretinoin well, I apply it directly after the snail mucin has absorbed. A pea-sized amount (one pump for me) is sufficient. It's important not to overdo it with retinoids, as this can lead to dryness and irritation. I like to dot the tretinoin all over my face and then gently massage it in, ensuring even coverage. Remember, consistency is key with retinoids, but that doesn't necessarily mean daily use. I use tretinoin three times a week and focus on hydration on the other days. This allows my skin to reap the benefits of tretinoin without overdoing it. Give your skin a few minutes to absorb the tretinoin before moving on to the final step.
This is a non-negotiable step, especially after using retinoids! Moisturizer helps to lock in all the beneficial ingredients you've just applied, creating a protective barrier against environmental aggressors. I'm currently using the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream, which has been a lifesaver for my skin, especially when using tretinoin. It's incredibly hydrating and helps to strengthen the skin barrier, combating any potential dryness or flakiness. Apply a generous amount to your face and neck – don't be stingy! Moisturizer is essential for all skin types, even oily skin. It helps to balance your skin's natural oils and prevent dryness caused by retinoids. It also ensures that the hydrating benefits of the snail mucin are sealed in, keeping your skin plump and supple.
This specific combination of snail mucin and tretinoin/retinol is best used at night. Retinoids are photosensitive, meaning they break down in sunlight and can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage. Snail mucin, on the other hand, can be used both morning and night.
Speaking of sun protection, always, always, always wear a broad-spectrum SPF during the day, especially when using retinoids. This is crucial for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays and preventing premature aging and sun damage. SPF is an absolute must-have in any skincare routine, regardless of whether you're using retinoids.
This routine has truly transformed my skin. The combination of snail mucin and tretinoin provides both intense hydration and powerful renewal, leading to a healthier, more radiant complexion. Remember to listen to your skin and adjust the frequency of retinoid use as needed. Start slowly and gradually increase the frequency as your skin tolerates it.
