Tinted Face Sunscreen for Eye Area, 100% Mineral Sunscreen Formula
Hey everyone, Renee here! We all know the delicate skin around our eyes is the first to show signs of aging. It's thinner, more prone to dryness, and constantly subjected to movement from blinking and expressions. This makes it a prime target for fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and other unwelcome guests. That's why a dedicated eye care routine is absolutely essential for anyone serious about well-aging.
Today, I'm sharing an updated look at my absolute favorite eye treatments – the formulas I rely on for both protection and repair. These products are tough on wrinkles, dark circles, and all that jazz, but still gentle enough for this sensitive area. And, importantly, they're all cosmetically elegant. Because who wants goop around their eyes? These are designed to be just as effective as the powerhouse serums and creams we use on the rest of our faces.
Let's dive right in!
This is one of my holy grail eye treatments, especially for my winter evening skincare routine. I'm currently using the Crystal Retinal 6, but Medik8 also offers it in strengths 3 and 10. (Full disclosure: I've partnered with Medik8 on this portion of the blog post, but as you know, I've been a genuine fan of their products for years.) I've been singing the praises of their Crystal Retinals for ages, and I honestly credit them with transforming my skin and making me a retinoid convert. When they released this eye cream, I was ecstatic! I knew the delicate skin around my eyes could benefit from something more…potent. And these are the first clinical-strength retinaldehyde formulas specifically designed for the eyes.
The texture is divine – as good as it gets, in my opinion. It has this beautiful silky feel that glides on smoothly and absorbs quickly without leaving any residue. I only use this in my evening routine, but it’s surprisingly moisturizing and hydrating. I even apply it to my brow bone to address those pesky forehead wrinkles. It doesn't feel heavy or greasy at all, but it plumps out those fine lines and crinkles like magic. I also find that the subtle yellow tint from the retinaldehyde helps neutralize the darkness under my eyes, which for me is more of a purplish, bruise-like, anemic kind of darkness.
I haven't experienced any sensitivity since I started using the level 6, but I was very careful when I first introduced it. I started by using it just twice a week and gradually increased the frequency until I could tolerate it every night. Because it's the eye area, I think it's wise to start with the Crystal Retinal 3, which contains 0.03% retinaldehyde and is super gentle. Clinical trials over a 12-week period have shown significant improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, dark circles, and overall youthfulness. Another plus? It's fragrance-free, which is a must for sensitive skin. I'll definitely keep you updated on my progress as I eventually transition to the Crystal Retinal 10.

This is a lifesaver for anyone dealing with milia (those tiny white bumps) around their eyes, or if you're just milia-prone in general. It's also fantastic for addressing patchy, flaky skin, which can sometimes occur around the eyes. This is an eye cream I constantly rotate back into my routine. I go through phases where milia accumulate, especially around the inner corners of my eyes. This cream has been a game-changer. It's gentle yet effective, gradually smoothing out those bumps without irritation.
Neostrata is known for its expertise in AHAs and PHAs (polyhydroxy acids). PHAs are perfect for the eye area because they're excellent humectants, meaning they draw moisture into the skin and plump it up. They also brighten and gently exfoliate without causing irritation or photosensitivity (so you don't have to worry about sun exposure after using it). You can even use this twice a day. It works slowly but surely, and the results are worth it. PHAs also have antioxidant properties, which protect the skin and strengthen the skin barrier over time.
The texture is luxurious – incredibly smooth and silky. It absorbs quickly and leaves the skin feeling soft and hydrated. I apply it all around my eyes, and the difference is noticeable. My skin feels significantly smoother and softer. It's also fragrance-free, safe for contact lens wearers, ophthalmologist-tested, and wears beautifully under concealer or eye makeup.
Alternative PHA Application Tip: If you already have a gentle PHA toner or serum, like Medik8's Press & Glow, you can use that instead of a dedicated eye cream, especially if your milia are concentrated around the orbital bone (but not if they're on your eyelid or close to your waterline – stick to the eye cream in those cases). Soak a Q-tip or a small piece of cotton gauze in the PHA solution (make sure to squeeze out any excess liquid), and gently dab it onto the affected areas. Just be extremely careful!
If you're searching for a truly excellent eye sunscreen, this is one of the best I've ever tried. The texture of this zinc oxide sunscreen is unbelievable. It feels like a luxurious chemical sunscreen – sheer, hydrating, and silky smooth. It applies evenly, dries down quickly, and feels weightless. There's a slight universal tint, but it doesn't provide any coverage. It actually looks a bit dark on me initially, but it blends out completely, leaving no trace behind.
This formula is also infused with antioxidants, which boost the sun protection and help combat free radical damage. It's lightweight, dries down completely, and sits well under makeup without pilling or creasing. It's fragrance-free and ophthalmologist-tested, making it suitable for even the most sensitive eyes. Because it's specifically formulated for the eye area, it feels almost wasteful to use it on my entire face (even though I'm tempted every day!). But my face has so many other sunscreen options!

I'm currently obsessed with eye patches. There's nothing quite like a good, sturdy eye patch, especially if you keep them in the fridge for an extra cooling and soothing effect. They're perfect for de-puffing, hydrating, and brightening the under-eye area, especially after a long night or before a special occasion.
Two of my favorites are Pyeonggang Yul's Black Tea Time Reverse Eye Patches and Indeed Labs' Snoxin II Under Eye Patches. The Pyeonggang Yul patches are infused with black tea extract, which is rich in antioxidants and helps to reduce puffiness and dark circles. They have a hydrogel texture that adheres well to the skin and feels incredibly refreshing.
I love that the Indeed Labs patches contain argireline, a peptide that helps relax the muscles around the eyes and smooth out wrinkles, similar to the effect of Botox. I prefer thicker, sturdier patches that stay put (no sliding around!), and these fit the bill perfectly. They're also biodegradable and fragrance-free.

One of the most important treatments in my arsenal for age-related eye concerns is NIOD's Fractionated Eye-Contour Concentrate. This serum has been a favorite for years, and nothing else compares. It tackles the more acute signs of aging with its potent formula, targeting everything from fine lines and wrinkles to drooping eyelids and loss of elasticity. It's been especially effective for my upper eyelids, which is where I first started noticing drooping and crinkling. Layering hydration and moisture is essential for the eye area, and this serum provides a wonderful boost of hydration that instantly plumps things up. You don't even always need a separate moisturizer over it.
This serum combines 28 clinical technologies that target multiple signs of aging, and these ingredients and complexes make up a whopping 72% of the formula. It's incredibly concentrated. The technologies work to increase elasticity in the upper and lower eyelids, address hydration, expression lines, facial tension, pigmentation, fluid retention, and skin renewal and regeneration. It's packed with peptides, antioxidants, and hydrating ingredients.
Comparison with The Ordinary: I know I'll be asked about The Ordinary's Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum, so I want to mention it briefly. While it's marketed for lashes and brows, some people use it around the eyes. While it's a good option and more affordable, I don't find it as effective as the NIOD serum for addressing advanced signs of aging. If your concerns are more preventative and you're just starting to see the first signs of aging, then The Ordinary serum is a great choice. But for more advanced concerns, the NIOD is in a league of its own.
For brightening the eye area and banishing those pesky dark circles, I have two go-to favorites.
This eye cream is perfect for those days when my eyes look dull, fatigued, or anemic. It contains three powerful vitamin C derivatives, 3% tranexamic acid, and licorice root, all known for their brightening and pigmentation-evening properties. It also includes bakuchiol and peptides for anti-aging benefits and caffeine for de-puffing. My favorite feature is the golden hue, similar to Ole Henriksen's Banana Bright Eye Crème. It provides instant brightening and makes my eyes look more awake. The texture is lightweight and refreshing, and it works beautifully under makeup without creasing or pilling.

This cream focuses on brightening and antioxidant protection with tranexamic acid and glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from free radical damage and brighten the complexion. What I love about this cream is that it's surprisingly moisturizing without feeling heavy. It has a rich yet silky smooth texture that absorbs quickly, leaving my skin feeling hydrated and comfortable. I even use it on my upper eyelids without any issues.
So there you have it! An updated look at my favorite hardworking eye treatments for well-aging. I hope this helps you find some new favorites for your own routine. Thanks for reading, and until next time, I'm wishing you great skin health!
