Annyeong, everyone! Welcome back to my blog, and a warm welcome to any new faces joining us today. I'm Ray, and my skin is a constant adventure—oily, sensitive, reactive, dehydrated, and sometimes even combination, depending on the season. It's a wild ride!

Today, we're exploring the exciting world of K-Beauty clay masks. K-Beauty is renowned for its cutting-edge skincare innovations, but it also has a remarkable ability to breathe new life into classic product categories that might seem a little…dated. The clay mask is a perfect example. For a while, it felt like clay masks had faded into the background, especially within the K-Beauty sphere. I mostly saw Western beauty brands holding onto this product type.

But K-Beauty, always pushing the boundaries, has discovered innovative ways for us to rediscover the joy of clay masking. One of the key strategies is the development of hybrid formulas that maximize both functionality and effectiveness. And that's exactly what we're diving into today: clay masks that have evolved far beyond their predecessors.

Here on my blog, I share my honest skincare experiences so you can make informed decisions about your own routine. Remember, everything I share is based on my personal experience. If you have any serious skin concerns, it's always best to consult a dermatologist or esthetician. Now, let's get started! 우리 가자!

1. Mari & May Vegan Blackberry Complex Glow Wash Off Pack: A Gentle Take on the Classic

This Mari & May mask is the closest we get to the traditional clay mask experience among the five we're exploring today. It's designed to dry down to that familiar earthy, hardened state before rinsing. However, as I mentioned, K-Beauty doesn't simply revive a product category without enhancing it. This Blackberry Glow Wash Off Pack is noticeably softer and gentler than your typical clay mask. It comes with a spatula (which I inevitably seem to misplace!), and it glides effortlessly onto the skin.

A quick note on terminology: in K-Beauty, you'll see various terms used for these products – "wash off pack," "mask," "mud mask," or "clay mask." From my conversations with marketing directors and CMOs in the industry, these terms are essentially interchangeable. Brands choose whichever resonates best with them. I've observed that Korea-focused brands tend to prefer "pack," while globally focused brands lean towards "mask."

I've reviewed this mask a couple of times before, so feel free to check out those posts for a more in-depth look. If you prefer an even softer, creamier texture, I highly recommend Mari & May's Rose Hyaluronic Hydra Wash Off Pack. It has a luxurious, buttery feel compared to the Blackberry version. Or, you can explore the next mask on our list!

2. Beauty of Joseon Red Bean Refreshing Pore Mask: Pore Care Powerhouse

I've used this mask in the past, but not consistently, so I'm thrilled to revisit it. My initial experience was positive, and I'm curious to see how it holds up. Beauty of Joseon is a brand that, in my experience, tends to be hit or miss. However, this Red Bean Refreshing Pore Mask is definitely a hit for me.

What sets this mask apart is its creamy texture, which challenges our preconceived notions of traditional clay masks. I recall this being one of the pioneers in Korea that helped reignite the clay mask trend back in 2022. Pore care is the star of the show here. In fact, the texture and consistency are remarkably similar to Mari & May's Rose Hyaluronic Hydra Wash Off Pack.

I adore the tiny red bean particles embedded in the mask, which provide gentle exfoliation to slough away dead skin cells. It also has a surprising banana scent! I have no idea where that comes from, but I find it delightful. If you're not a fan of strong fragrances in your clay masks, this subtle, non-floral, non-citrus scent might be perfect for you.

Pros
  • Gentle exfoliation, subtle scent.
Cons
  • Scent may not appeal to everyone.

3. LAGOM White Kaolin Mud Mask: The Cream Cheese Dream

Yes, I've been raving about this LAGOM mud mask recently, and it's not just because of a recent collaboration. I was genuinely surprised by how much I've come to love this product.

Unlike typical clay masks, this one doesn't dry down to a hard, stiff, plaster-like texture. Instead, it maintains a soft, almost cream cheese-like consistency (that's what my sister and I call it now!) throughout the entire application. I usually leave it on for about 10 minutes before rinsing. The rinsing process can be a bit messy, so I recommend cleansing your face, applying the mask, and then hopping in the shower for easy removal. You can find my full review of this mud mask in my recent LAGOM review post.

Pros
  • Soft texture, easy to rinse.
Cons

4. FULLY Green Tomato Clay Mask Cleanser: The Two-in-One Wonder

As I mentioned earlier, K-Beauty excels at not only inventing new skincare technologies but also revitalizing older product categories with enhanced functionality. This Green Tomato Clay Mask Cleanser by FULLY perfectly embodies this concept. It begins as a clay mask, but after about 5 minutes, you can lather it up into a rich, foamy cleanser.

You might have seen me use this cleanser in some of my previous content. There seems to be some confusion about the proper usage. I apply it directly to dry skin without cleansing beforehand. After 5 minutes, I rinse it off in the shower (efficiency is key!). The lathering action makes rinsing much easier, especially since it can get a bit messy. The tube packaging is a game-changer, making application quick and convenient. Honestly, I wish all brands would adopt tube packaging for their mask cleansers. I'm so over jars!

Pros
  • Dual function, convenient packaging.
Cons
  • Can be messy if not rinsed properly.

5. APRILSKIN Pink Aloe Facial Polish Cleanser: The Reigning Champion

Finally, we arrive at my all-time favorite clay mask cleanser: APRILSKIN's Pink Aloe Pack Cleanser. I adore its gentle nature; my skin never feels stripped or dry after using it. Similar to the Beauty of Joseon mask, this one contains ground mung beans (not red beans) for gentle exfoliation. As someone with contact dermatitis, the mung beans are a fantastic, non-irritating option.

Korean Pink Aloe, the other star ingredient, is reportedly significantly more hydrating than regular aloe vera. While it's difficult to quantify the exact hydration boost since it's a rinse-off product, my skin definitely feels supple and hydrated throughout the process.

My only complaint is the size. I wish APRILSKIN would release a larger version. 120 grams is standard, but I'd love a larger quantity since I use it almost nightly. APRILSKIN, if you're reading this, please consider a bigger size! This is the undisputed king of the revitalized clay mask cleanser category.

And that concludes our K-Beauty clay mask adventure! Let me know in the comments which of these masks you've tried or if you have any other K-Beauty products you'd like me to explore. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this new wave of hybrid mask cleansers. I'm personally obsessed!

Until next time, stay safe, stay hydrated, and most importantly, be gentle with yourself. I mean it. Annyeong!
