I think one day we’re going to look back at this era of the internet and realize how completely insane it was that publicly dissecting a stranger’s personality became entertainment. Someone makes a three minute video confidently explaining why a person they’ve never met is a narcissist, a sociopath, a terrible mother, a horrible friend, secretly evil… and then millions of people who also do not know that person pile into the comments. These are real people. With real families, kids, jobs, relationships and lives that exist outside of whatever 30 second clip you just watched. And I genuinely believe that if any of us had a camera following us around long enough, someone could edit together a pretty convincing case that we’re an asshole too. Take our worst moment, remove the context, add ominous music and suddenly there’s a six-part series. Accountability is one thing. Turning strangers into villains for sport is another. The internet has gotten way too comfortable forgetting there’s an actual human being on the other side of the content. And I really think we’re going to study this someday. #HumanityOnline #ContextMatters #DigitalAge #InternetCulture #OnlineBehavior
