Hello everyone! It’s Tina, and I'm thrilled to share my ultimate serum lineup for 2024. As a dedicated skincare enthusiast, I'm constantly exploring new products and revisiting old favorites. Living in Melbourne, Australia, with its often dry climate, means my skin needs extra hydration and protection. This year's selection reflects that focus, with a mix of returning champions and exciting new discoveries. So, let's dive into the serums that made the cut!

Returning Favorites: The Tried and True

Some serums simply become staples, earning a permanent spot in your routine. These two have proven their worth year after year.

Melano CC Vitamin C Essence: The Budget-Friendly Brightening Superstar

I first raved about this gem back in my 2020 Best Of list, and four years later, it remains a constant companion. Remember, in the world of J-Beauty, "essence" often translates to "serum." This affordable vitamin C powerhouse, featuring ascorbic acid, delivers incredible brightening results without breaking the bank. The clever opaque packaging and tiny dropper dispenser minimize oxidation, ensuring the potent formula stays fresh. While the slightly oily texture isn't my absolute favorite, its effectiveness at such a low price (around $15) is unbeatable. I often experiment with other vitamin C serums for a more luxurious experience, but the Melano CC is my reliable travel companion and my go-to recommendation for anyone seeking a budget-friendly brightening boost.

Decorté Liposome Advanced Repair Serum: The Luxurious Pre-Serum Game-Changer

This serum graced my 2023 Best Of list, and I continued to enjoy its benefits throughout 2024, even finishing a second bottle! Yes, it's a splurge – perhaps the priciest serum I consistently repurchase – but the results speak for themselves. Initially, I used it as a regular serum, but later discovered its true potential as a booster, applied immediately after cleansing. This revelation transformed my routine. The Decorté Liposome Advanced Repair Serum preps my skin beautifully, softening it and enhancing the absorption of subsequent products. Used consistently in my morning routine for the past few months, it has brought remarkable stability to my skin. While occasional breakouts still occur, my overall skin health has become significantly more consistent. I attribute this partly to another PM serum I'll discuss later, but the Decorté has been my steadfast AM booster, providing a luxurious foundation for the rest of my skincare.

New Discoveries: Best Boosters

This year, I've become a true believer in the power of booster serums. These two stand out as my favorites, one for AM and one for PM.

Muji Skier Woman Method Moist Intensive Boost Serum (AM): The Hydration Hero

Sadly, I finished this bottle a few months ago, but its memory lives on. I used the Muji Skier Woman Method Moist Intensive Boost Serum as my AM booster until mid-year, before switching to the Decorté. Similar to the Decorté in texture and the immediate hydrating effect it delivers, the Muji serum boasts a slightly different ingredient profile. It focuses on niacinamide, ceramides, and saccharide isomerate (a powerful humectant) to boost hydration and strengthen the skin barrier. I particularly loved using it under sheet masks for an extra dose of moisture. A trip to Japan in October presented the perfect opportunity to repurchase, but alas, I completely forgot! It's definitely at the top of my to-buy list.

  • Not easily available outside Japan.

VT Cosmetics Mild Reedle Shot 50 (PM): The Gentle Resurfacing Powerhouse

The VT Cosmetics Mild Reedle Shot 50 has taken the beauty world by storm, and for good reason! This K-beauty sensation has captivated audiences globally. I started using it around September/October but wasn't initially consistent due to its mild tingling sensation, which can be a bit much for sensitive or unstable skin. However, over the past few months, I've incorporated it more regularly into my nightly routine, applying it immediately after cleansing (whenever I remember!). Consistency is key with this innovative serum. I opted for the "Mild 50" version, even gentler than the standard "100" formula. While it hasn't drastically transformed my skin, I've noticed smoother pores and a reduction in bumps. The magic lies in its blend of cica and tiny "reedles" – a liquid form of microneedling ingredients – designed to enhance absorption and refine skin texture. I'm eager to try the "100" version and the other variations with added ingredients like collagen, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C, which are reportedly less prickly. With my current bottle nearing empty, my Reedle Shot journey is far from over!

New Discoveries: Best Barrier Serums

A robust skin barrier is essential for healthy, resilient skin. These two serums have been my top picks for maintaining and strengthening that crucial barrier.

RNW DER. CONCENTRATE Ceramide Plus: The Lightweight Barrier Booster

Another empty bottle that's no longer gracing my shelf, the RNW DER. CONCENTRATE Ceramide Plus was my go-to whenever my skin needed a little extra TLC. Its lightweight, slightly viscous texture made it easy to incorporate into both my AM and PM routines. The formula boasts five types of ceramides and a multi-peptide solution to provide comprehensive barrier protection, moisture retention, and strengthening. I'd particularly recommend this serum for those with oilier or combination skin due to its lighter texture.

Lightweight ceramide serum for barrier protection.

Pros
  • Lightweight, suitable for oily skin, barrier protection.
Cons
  • Not very moisturizing for dry skin.

Celimax Dual Barrier Skin Boosting Serum: The Dry Skin Savior

After finishing the RNW serum, I realized the importance of having a barrier-focused product in my routine. The Celimax Dual Barrier Skin Boosting Serum stepped up to the plate and delivered exceptional results. Like the RNW, it contains ceramides and peptides, but also incorporates panthenol and biosaccharide gum-1, a natural humectant. This combination makes it more moisturizing and slightly thicker than the RNW, making it ideal for dry skin or during the colder winter months. It melts beautifully into the skin, leaving a noticeable plumping effect. For those seeking a replacement for the discontinued By Wishtrend Cera-Barrier Soothing Ampoule, I highly recommend giving the Celimax serum a try.

New Discoveries: Best Brightening Serums

Brightening serums are non-negotiable in my routine. Even skin tone creates the illusion of healthier skin, regardless of other concerns. I always incorporate one, and these two have been my favorites this year.

Innisfree Vitamin C Green Tea Enzyme Brightening Serum: The Delightful Daily Brightener

I confess, the adorable Kuromi packaging initially caught my eye, but the formula itself proved to be a delightful surprise. The Innisfree Vitamin C Green Tea Enzyme Brightening Serum combines water-soluble and oil-soluble vitamin C for enhanced brightening, along with green tea enzymes for gentle exfoliation and texture improvement. The real winner here is the user experience. The cute bottle, the tiny vitamin C capsules suspended in the serum, and the incredibly lightweight, watery texture make it a joy to use. It feels almost like a toner and layers seamlessly under other products. This has been my primary AM serum for the latter half of the year. A travel-sized bottle from a set introduced me to its wonders during a trip to Japan, and I loved it so much that I opened the full-sized version upon my return. The impressive ingredient list has also sparked my interest in exploring more Innisfree products.

Pros
  • Lightweight, effective brightening, gentle exfoliation.
Cons
  • Slightly tacky finish.

Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner (with Niacinamide 10% + Tranexamic Acid 4% Serum): The PM Brightening Powerhouse

While I consistently use a brightening serum, I haven't featured this one much on my channel. The Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner, combined with their Niacinamide 10% + Tranexamic Acid 4% Serum, has been my go-to PM brightening duo. The serum boasts a lightweight, liquidy texture and utilizes niacinamide and tranexamic acid for brightening, offering an alternative to vitamin C. It does have a slightly tacky finish, which is why I prefer using it at night. I've seen rave reviews about its effectiveness in fading dark spots, although I haven't personally experienced dramatic results in that area, as my acne scars tend to fade relatively quickly. However, for user experience, accessibility, and affordability, it's hard to beat.

Final Thoughts: A Year of Serum Successes

So there you have it – my top serums of 2024! Every year, I aspire to explore more serums, and while I don't always achieve that goal to the fullest extent, I'm incredibly happy with the variety I've experienced this year. My serum preferences have evolved over time, but barrier support and brightening remain my top priorities. Boosters are a relatively new addition to my routine, but they've quickly become essential.

I hope this overview has provided some inspiration for your own skincare journey! I'm always eager to hear about your favorite serums, so feel free to share your recommendations in the comments below.
