My skin is absolutely radiant today, I'm loving it, living for it! It's got that lit-from-within glow that's been trending ever since Jennie from Blackpink made it famous. That instant cooling effect? Chef's kiss. I saw this trend and thought, pure genius! It's even bigger in Korea, where everyone's saying it's a dupe for a certain luxury brand (cough, Chanel, cough). Speaking of Chanel… let's get into it!
Today, we're dissecting viral TikTok skincare hacks and products. I'm going to put them to the test and let you know if they're worth incorporating into your routine. So, without further ado, let's get started! (P.S. A huge thank you to SK-II for the gorgeous birthday flowers!)
The first hack we're tackling is the icy water plunge. You know, the one where you dunk your face into a bowl of ice water? This one's been circulating for a while, gaining traction after Jennie from Blackpink was seen doing it in a vlog while prepping for a red carpet event. It's recently made a comeback, and I totally get the appeal.
When you're applying makeup, especially for a big event, keeping your skin cool is key. Heat is makeup's worst enemy. A warm face can cause makeup to pill, slide, and generally create a messy canvas. So, in those desperate times, an icy plunge might seem like the perfect solution.
However, I personally wouldn't recommend it. Repeatedly dunking your face in ice water can seriously irritate your skin. It can aggravate redness, exacerbate existing irritation, and disrupt your skin barrier. You're essentially throwing your skin into a state of shock, which is never a good thing.
Instead of shocking your skin with icy water, there are gentler, more effective ways to cool down and prep your skin for makeup.
A cooling sheet mask is a much better alternative. One of my favorites is the Biodance Hydro Cera-Nol Real Deep Mask. It's packed with ceramides and hyaluronic acid, both of which are amazing for hydrating, repairing, and strengthening the skin barrier. The cooling sensation is incredibly soothing and refreshing, like a mini spa treatment for your face.

Another fantastic option is using chilled toner pads. I'm currently obsessed with the Soo Good Feel Soo Calm Toner Pad UPGRADE. These pads are soaked in a calming toner formulated with centella asiatica and tea tree extract, known for their anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Storing them in the fridge for a few minutes before use elevates the cooling experience. They're perfect for de-puffing, reducing redness, and calming sensitive skin, especially after a long day.

Next up: slugging. This trend involves coating your face with a thick occlusive, like Vaseline, before bed. The promise? Super hydrated, glowing skin. While it might work for some, particularly those with extremely dry skin, I have reservations.
Slugging can trap everything beneath that occlusive layer, including dirt, oil, and bacteria. For those prone to breakouts, this can be a disaster waiting to happen. It can also lead to clogged pores and milia (those tiny white bumps). If you're considering slugging, proceed with caution. Ensure your skin is thoroughly cleansed beforehand and start slowly, maybe once or twice a week, to see how your skin reacts.
Another hack I've seen floating around is using lemon juice to brighten skin. Please, please don't do this. Lemon juice is highly acidic and can disrupt your skin's pH balance, leading to irritation and increased sensitivity to the sun. This can increase your risk of sunburn and hyperpigmentation. There are plenty of safe and effective brightening ingredients available, like vitamin C and niacinamide, so there's no need to risk damaging your skin with lemon juice.
Speaking of vitamin C, let's talk about a product that's been making waves on TikTok: the [insert product name] Vitamin C Serum. This serum has garnered rave reviews for its brightening, smoothing, and evening effects. And I have to agree! I've been using it for a few weeks and have noticed a visible improvement in my skin's clarity and brightness. It absorbs quickly, doesn't feel sticky, and layers seamlessly under makeup. If you're in the market for a good vitamin C serum, this one is definitely worth checking out. It has a lightweight texture that sinks into the skin quickly without leaving a greasy residue. I've noticed a significant improvement in the overall evenness of my skin tone and a reduction in the appearance of dark spots.
Gua sha, the practice of using a smooth stone tool to massage the face, has also taken TikTok by storm. While I find gua sha to be a relaxing and enjoyable addition to my skincare routine, I don't believe it's a miracle worker. It won't magically reshape your face or erase wrinkles. However, it can promote lymphatic drainage, which can help reduce puffiness and give your skin a more toned appearance. Remember to use gentle pressure and a good quality facial oil to prevent tugging or pulling on your skin. I prefer to use a jade gua sha tool and a lightweight facial oil. I find the coolness of the jade incredibly soothing, and the oil allows the tool to glide smoothly over my skin.
Finally, let's discuss double cleansing. This two-step method involves using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser. The oil-based cleanser breaks down makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil, while the water-based cleanser removes any remaining impurities. Double cleansing is especially beneficial for those who wear makeup or live in areas with high pollution. It can help prevent clogged pores, breakouts, and dullness. I've been double cleansing for years, and I can honestly say it's made a huge difference in the clarity and health of my skin. It's a non-negotiable step in my routine.
So, there you have it – a breakdown of some viral TikTok skincare trends and products. Remember, not everything you see online is worth trying. It's crucial to do your research and, most importantly, listen to your skin. What works for one person might not work for another. If you're ever unsure about a product or technique, consult with a dermatologist. Skincare is a personal journey, and finding what works best for you is key.
