Gentle Cleansing for Sensitive Skin
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of skincare products available? Do you constantly scroll through endless YouTube videos and Instagram reels, wondering what really works and how to build a routine that’s perfect for your skin? I completely understand. It’s a jungle out there. So, before you buy every single hyped-up product you see online, take a deep breath and let's break it down together. I'm going to make skincare so simple, you'll feel like a pro by the time you finish reading this.
First things first, let's address the elephant in the room. You might be thinking, "Wait, she didn't even mention what cleanser she used at the beginning!" And that's precisely the point. What works for me might not work for you. While I'll happily share my personal routine, please don't just copy it blindly. The most important thing is to customize your routine to your specific needs.
I'm not a dermatologist; my background is in real estate and emergency medicine. I served as a medic in the military. My skincare knowledge comes from decades of personal experience – I'm 52 now, and I’ve dealt with my fair share of melasma, breakouts, fine lines, and the occasional oily patch. So, trust me, I’ve been around the block! But everyone’s skin is different. So, first and foremost, see your dermatologist! They’re the real experts. Think of online content (including mine!) as entertainment and inspiration, not gospel.
Today, I'm going to walk you through one of my ultimate morning routines. I started with skin that felt a little dehydrated and dull, and I'm going to show you how I transformed it into something radiant and healthy. And guess what? You don't need a mountain of products to achieve great skin. Seriously, if you're in a rush, you can get away with just two steps: cleanser and a moisturizer with SPF, or even just sunscreen alone. Slap it on and go! That might be all your skin needs.
This morning, I used the Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser (3). I don't have super sensitive skin, but I prefer this cleanser on days when I plan to use more potent exfoliating ingredients later in my routine. It provides a super gentle cleanse that doesn't disrupt my skin barrier. It simply removes any leftover products from the night before and any…well, you know, dust or debris that might have accumulated on my face while I slept. It leaves my skin feeling clean and refreshed, perfectly prepped for the next steps.

One question I get asked all the time is about growth factor serums. I’m not using one today, but if you do, apply it right after cleansing. Growth factors can be unstable, and you don't want anything hindering their absorption, especially considering their often hefty price tag! A popular one is SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum (4), but it’s definitely a splurge.

Okay, so my skin is clean and dry. Now for my absolute holy grail product: Dermalect's Self Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum (1). This stuff is a game-changer! It's a blend of amazing ingredients, but the real magic comes from the three key actives: an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) to slough away dullness and flakiness, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) to clear out pores, and vitamin C for brightening and collagen production. It's called "Beauty Sleep in a Bottle" because it's typically recommended for nighttime use. However, I find I can use it during the day if I'm not spending hours in direct sunlight, as long as I diligently follow up with sunscreen. The results are almost instant – brighter, smoother skin. And within an hour, I get that gorgeous inner glow we all crave.

Now, at this point, you could totally stop. Just add a moisturizer or a moisturizing sunscreen, and you're done. But my skin was feeling extra parched this morning, probably due to some less-than-stellar hydration habits lately. So, I'm adding an extra layer of hydration with Dermalift's Rapid Repair Barrier Serum (2). This serum is packed with ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. It’s like a tall glass of water for your face. I especially love it when I'm using the Dermalect Beauty Sleep Serum. They seem to work synergistically, enhancing each other's benefits. This serum has a slightly thick and almost slimy texture at first, but it sinks in beautifully and leaves my skin feeling plump and hydrated. I even use it around my eyes and on my lips when they’re feeling dry.
I know some of you are probably thinking, "Wait, what about my vitamin C serum? Or my alpha arbutin? Or all my other serums?" If you enjoy layering and it works for your skin, go for it! Generally, I layer from thinnest to thickest consistency. But you absolutely don't need a ton of serums. A simple routine can be just as effective, if not more so.
Since this is my ultimate routine, I’m adding an eye cream. I’m currently testing a new one that I’m loving, but I’ll share more about it in a separate post once I’ve given it a thorough try. Again, you don't need a separate eye cream. You can just use your regular moisturizer around your eyes.
Next up: neck cream! I use Dermalect's Self-Esteem Firming Neck Lift (6). Like the Beauty Sleep Serum, it contains AHA, BHA, and vitamin C. It’s amazing for smoothing crepey skin on the neck. Layering the serum and the neck cream together creates a powerful combo. While it won't perform miracles (it won't get rid of excess fat or completely erase deep wrinkles), it does noticeably improve texture and firmness. My neck feels as soft as my face now!
Now, I could use a separate moisturizer and sunscreen, or I can streamline things with a moisturizing sunscreen. One of my favorites is Dermatology's Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46 (8). However, since my husband keeps stealing my Dermalect Rapid Repair Facial Moisturizer (7), I recently bought a new one. It has a lovely, natural scent (derived from the ingredients themselves, not added fragrance) and absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film. It's perfect for both morning and night. If you prefer a drugstore option, Vanicream’s Daily Facial Moisturizer (9) is another great choice.
Before applying sunscreen, I like to add a layer of my favorite plumping lip balm, Revision Skincare YouthFull Lip Replenisher (10). It keeps my lips hydrated and smooth, especially under the potentially drying effects of sunscreen.
And finally, the most important step: sunscreen! I’m using ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless (11). It’s a tinted sunscreen that’s great for melasma and hyperpigmentation, and it also has DNA repair benefits. Some dermatologists even suggest that a sunscreen like this can replace separate DNA repair serums. It’s lightweight and blends beautifully, making it perfect for normal to oily skin. If you have dry skin and have tried this one, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
I also like to use Colorescience Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35 (12) under my eyes. It acts as a concealer and provides mineral sun protection for the delicate eye area.
So, there you have it! My ultimate morning skincare routine. Remember, this is what works for me. Your perfect routine might look completely different. The key is to listen to your skin, consult with a dermatologist, and don't be afraid to experiment (within reason!). I hope this helps you navigate the world of skincare and create a routine that makes you feel confident and radiant. Thanks for reading!
